In 2005 Metal Blade signed 3 and now re-releases their 4th CD "Wake Pig" (originally Planet Noise Records, 2004) with new artwork, two new songs ("One Way Town" and "Circus Without Clowns"), a few remixes and Max Olsen's vocals added to "Where's Max". But, 3 seems to be an odd band to be on Metal Blade.. not all that metal they are I'm afraid. They are often compared to Coheed And Cambria, but I don't know that band at all. So when I look at bands I do know, I have to say that at times they remind me of Pain Of Salvation or even Heaven's Cry, but singer/guitarist Joey Eppard's voice is way sweeter... way too sweet most of the time. After a lot of spins I do get used to it in the songs I love most. The songs I don't like at all stay very hard to digest.....
The music is progressive, innovative, original and interesting on many levels. Actually the music is pretty amazing most of the time and they're outstanding musicians! The first half of the album contains some great songs, like the brilliant "Alien Angel", "Monster", the flamenco-style acoustic instrumental "Bramfatura" and the captivating (and also brilliant) "Trust". And then the CD totally collapses in my opinion. Or my taste, whatever. Lullabies and popsongs with ultra sweet vocals and not half the depth as the songs before, and a heavier riff here and there can't save the day I'm afraid! Just when I'm about to give up all hope, something does happen again towards the end of the CD. "Where's Max" is weird, but at least it's interesting again! And "Amaze Disgrace" even does amaze me again, it's luckily in the vein of "Alien Angel" and "Trust" again. And to top it off, there is a hidden track with a great (very driven) remix of "Trust" featuring a drum solo.
Joey Eppard's voice is an acquired taste, and most likely too sweet for most metal fans (= our readers). Pop-prog-rock lovers should definitely check this out though. But for me, if only all the songs were of "Alien Angel"/"Monster"/"Bramfatura"/"Trust"/"Amaze Disgrace" quality and charisma this album would receive a straight 5 - but they aren't.
