How many more albums containing melodic death metal does the metal world need? I certainly don't, even though I generally like the genre. Of course I can even say that I like The Absence but there's unfortunately nothing that would make me recommend the album to anyone but die-hards with an everburning hunger for more, more, more.
America really has discovered Swedish death metal it seems. The Absence are home in the Bay Area but decided against the traditon of thrash metal in favour of melodic death metal. Very melodic actually, they have heaps of leads (they definitely have heard of Maiden as well) and nice melodies of which none are really outstanding or memorable though. Unlike many other bands there's no metalcore influence at all. It's up to everybody's own taste if that is good or not. I for one am fine with it. The vocals are mostly kept to the typical range, with the exception of some more clean passages in "Heaven Ablaze" and "Seven Demons" which enhance the former song worsen the latter. "Shattered" is an short instrumental and the only track featuring some acoustic guitars.
This review probably is as unoriginal as the music. It's well done and if you're a fan of the genre I can almost guarantee you'll at least find "From Your Grave" ok to listen to. But is that enough?
