Absolute Steel are from Norway and the first thing you might point your eye on, is the name of the band, the name of the album and the song titles. Oh, sweet heavens, what utter crap have I got on my hands now? Why me? But let prejudices be prejudices I say to myself until I notice the clever names of the musicians: Andy Boss, Dave Bomb and K2. I fail to keep the smutty prejudice out of my head. Finally I dare to put the cd into the player and all the horrid expectations seem to come true. A spoken intro about heavy metal. I fall to pieces again. The first actual song "We Sentence You to Death (Even if You're Innocent)" brings a smile of amazement on my face. This isn't all that bad. The music is quite straight forward heavy metal/hard rock straight from the 80's. While they may lack originality almost entirely, they still have managed to compose songs that are groovy and have a lot of those party elements (whatever they may be). Halfway through the album it starts to get a bit repetitve. On the other hand, most of the folk who listen to this kind of party heavy metal, are most likely drunk while listening to it, so I don't think it's that big a deal after all. K2's vocal performance is rather good. He may sound like a typical hard rock singer, but he does his job very well. The guitar playing is quite nice, but the solos are, excluding a few good ones, mostly just waste of time. More than once I find myself thinking that if these guys had been more serious on this release, they probably would have been noticed more widely, because based on the talent that clearly is there, they certainly would deserve their share. Recommended for fun (and) drinking parties!
