3. Future Without Past
4. Curfew
5. Children Of The Pauper King
6. Approaching Inner Circle
7. The Wanton Blades Of Lust
8. Epitome Of Delusion

10. A Perfect Forever

My expectations are high after the amazing debut "Purification". These Danes came up with a great mix of power through crunchy riffs and wonderful atmospheres created by the keyboards and singer Torben Askholm's somewhat nasal voice. I thought I'd just let the band take me by the hand and go through each song, curious of what it, and the next one, would bring.

"Santified" is powerful and I miss the keyboard layers that used to weave enchanting layers building up wonderful atmospheres. Certainly a great song though, with a lot of different ideas in it. It also still has the recognizable Anubis Gate trademarks like the crunchy riffs and Torben's wonderful voice - but it's just less atmospheric. Will it continue? "Kingdom Come" and "Future Without Past" are a bit catchier than what I'm used to from these Danes. Hmm. The balladesque "Curfew" is nice, but again... where are the beautiful atmospheres (apart from some "wind" at the end)? Great sensitive guitar solo though! The next 3-4 songs are really great, with the typical diversity, but still, they would've been even better with... you know it. In "Epitome Of Delusion" I find some towards the end, at last! It seamlessly flows into the beautifully acoustic, but very short, "Endless Grief". Then the killer riff of "A Perfect Forever" sets in, and this 12.30 minute song is an awesome end of the album.. mixing very powerful parts with sheer beautiful passages and solo. I'm almost forgetting my main critizism on this album ;)

They've chosen a more powerful and less atmospheric approach, and after a while I have to admit this is definitely a great album. The production is better, the songs as well as Torben's vocals are more diverse (they're still not as enchanting to me as some of the ones on "Purification" though!) and the titelsong is really killer, a great song to close with. But I certainly miss the haunting and enchanting mood of the first CD. I think it made this band really special and stand out... pity. So in the end I guess I'll give the same (already high) rating than the previous one - for my own taste I'd want to give a lower note, but that wouldn't be fair to the overall superb quality of the album either.
