Arachnes hail from Italy and they play melodic power metal with some neoclassical and proggy influences. The album includes 15 tracks and there are quite a few interludes and instrumentals within these. The leading roles in the band go to Franco Caruso (guitars) and Enzo Caruso (vocals and keyboards). Enzo's singing reminds me of Fabio Lione's (Rhapsody) so I don't think he's the best one around but definitely more than ok. Also Enzo's keyboard sound varies as he provides also piano, harpsichord, church organ and hammond.
The songs are somewhat technical and well played but most of them fail to keep the interest up and the overall atmosphere isn't quite as "fantasy-esque" as the cover art might let you think. The title track and "The Dreamer" are the strongest ones and while listening to these one really starts to think that this is a great album after all. On "Decisive Battle (Reprise)" you really get the feeling that you're in a church and the priest is a about to begin his sermon. The instrumental "Tango" and "The Rain Song" are a few more worth mentioning, but unfortunately the rest of the material more or less go to the "been there, done that"-category. After listening the album thoroughly it's inevitable that it gets a bit repetitive and some melodies are actually repeated. The players' skills are nothing to doubt about but the songs seem to suffer a bit because of the at times redundantly repetitive approach.
All in all this is well composed power metal with neoclassical and progressive elements and quite surprisingly it's not completely done in the "happy"-mode but unfortunately lacks the final magical touch that would make Arachnes rise above.
