Prior to this release The Armada was a completely unknown band to me. They're not anymore. The Armada was formed on the ruins of Stormwitch by Peter Langer (drums) and Damir Uzunovic (guitar). So, the band is relatively young, but consists of experienced musicians. The band comes from Germany and they play power metal. I've heard that too many times already, but in The Armada's case we can't talk about the typical happy and light melodic power metal. The Armada's outcome has some symphonic elements and progressive influences. Uzunovic's guitar playing is very good throughout and the riffs and the sound are quite close to that of Symphony X and his shredding solos are closer to Malmsteen-like neoclassical stuff. The singer of the band, Dirk Schäffner, was also totally unknown to me, which has been my loss. He manages to sound somewhat similar to legendary vocalists like Bruce Dickinson and David DeFeis and while not sounding exactly like either one he definitely is one of the stronger factors of the band. Mathias Nagl's keyboards and the occasional majesty-oozing choirs add a somewhat dark symphonic feel to the music, which ends up as slightly symphonic power metal of the darker kind, still remaining melodic with some progressive elements. Still with all these elements it feels like The Armada falls behind the peak of the genre being one of those quite good bands.
