With "Cardinal VII" Ashes To Ashes released their second album with DVS Records. Their style is a progressive mix of goth, doom, metal and classic, the band themselves describe it as Gregorian metal. The opener "New World Obscure" introduces you straight away with the heavy side of the band. Their choirs and the keyboard have a very dark melodic touch. There are many instrumental parts on the album, often very atmospheric and oriental. Vocalist Kenneth Brastad sings most times very emotionally, but now and then I find some parts monotonous. Sometimes they remind me of Royal Hunt, especially with the song "Behind Closed Eyes", maybe Ashes To Ashes is just a bit more in a goth/doom genre. For sure this album is with its complexity very hard to perform live. I wish they would be a bit heavier because some parts and especially the long "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi" bores me quite a bit, actually I prefer to skip this song. But if you don't mind those calm parts you should give Ashes To Ashes' "Cardinal VII" a go, it might take a few more spins before you dig the album.
