It's been almost two years since my first review for As I Lay Dying. Since then, As I Lay Dying did quite well from what I hear and read, be it excessive touring or even airplay on MTV for example. At the same time, an evergrowing mass of Gothenburg inspired death metal with some metalcore elements has flooded the metal market too and there's still no end.
It seems though that As I Lay Dying reduced the metalcore factor on their new album "Shadows Are Security" compared to the predecessor "Frail Words Collapse". Which for me is a good thing but still leaves me listening to nothing exciting or even new. I also like the production on this album better but some will perhaps miss the rawer edge of "Frail Words Collapse".
Brutal attacks (such as "Empty Hearts", "Control Is Dead") meet wonderful melodies, not only because of the melodic guitar work but also again because of some clean vocals here and there just like in "Confined" and "Through Struggle", but most of all in "The Darkest Nights" (the chorus extremely reminds me of Soilwork). Right in the middle As I Lay Dying slow it down a little by throwing in a more mid-paced song ("Repeating Yesterday").
"Shadows Are Security" is varied enough to keep the interest of the listener and melodic enough to reach a wider audience outside their original target group. It's well executed and all that...but I'm afraid it still won't make me a glowing fan of the genre.
