I have to admit I find it a bit odd that a band like Astral Doors can't find a better title for their 3rd album than "Astralism". Oh well, it's just a name. Fact is that the Swedes around guitarist Joachim Nordlund and drummer Johan Lindstedt, who founded the band in 2002, outdid themselves with this album. Well, if you have an exceptional singer like Patrik Johansson in your band, you can't really go wrong if the songwriting is halfway decent. Last year we already got a worthy appetizer with the EP "Raiders Of The Ark"!
And it's the same with this album. The opener "EVP" first crushes everything in its way and with "Black Rain" they have a real midtempo highlight right at the beginning. One of the coolest songtitles ever is "From Satan With Love". During "Fire In Our House" my jaw drops!! If I didn't know any better, I'd bet my mom that I heard Ronnie James Dio there... wow! "Israel" is also a strong song, but it's the slowest of the album. As an opposite to that one there is "Raiders Of The Ark", a fast song with a great chorus. You might know this song from last year's EP. There are more midtempo tracks, alternated with faster songs, and no ballad, which is a big plus to me! "In Rock We Trust" is the only song that is not of the high level of the rest, too much clichés, but then the 7.5 minute finale "Apocalypse Revealed" rules, it's powerful and without doubt one of the best songs on "Astralism".
Those who don't know the band and like Black Sabbath, Dio etc., should check out Astral Doors. I personally wouldn't be surprised if the Swedes steal the show on their tour with Blind Guardian next fall. I personally don't know which band I look forward to the most...
