Astral Doors was founded in spring 2002 by Swedish multi-musician Joachim Nordlund and Johan Lindstedt (former drummer of rap-metal group Buckshot O.D.). They teamed up and decided to write some metal songs in the spirit of the old heroes Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. And indeed, together with well-known engineer Peter Tätgren (Hypocrisy, Pain, Dimmu Borgir, Destruction, etc....) they caught the spirit on their debut album "Of Son And The Father". Now if you think you will get to hear the typical Abyss sound, you will be on the wrong path, be surprised! I was a bit sceptical first when I saw the album cover which I'm not impressed with, but no matter how the cover looks like, the main important thing is what's inside! This is an easy listening album, where the 11 solid songs vary from mid- to uptempo. It got me hooked from the first spin and I was honestly surprised when I pressed the play button and got to hear the amazing and powerful vocals. Patrik Johansson does the duties on vocals and the first thing that came to my mind when hearing his vox, was comparing him to Johnny Gioeli. He might not reach the level of Johnny - have to admit that Johnny belongs to my top ten of all time fave vocalists, but Patrik is getting close and sure will make his way up to the top. Note: he was chosen as the singer on the solo-project of well-known keyboardist Richard Andersson (Time Requiem / Majestic) called Space Odyssey as well as joining Danish/Swedish symphonic and progressive metal band Wuthering Heights for their third album.

When listening to Astral Doors' album "Of The Son And The Father" I'm not being reminded of Johnny Gioeli only, but also of Axel Rudi Pell! And I go a bit further, I also get Whitesnake in my mind and you can clearly hear similarities with Rainbow, Deep Purple - just to think of the Hammond sound on the album. This really isn't anything new, but I can whole-heartedly recommend this album to all those hardrock fans out there, this album won't dissapoint you, it rocks!!! Give this album a shot and if you disagree with me, get your ass on our forum and discuss it with me!
