Somewhere in between their last album and "The Curse", Atreyu became a heavy metal band. Gone are the clichés of metalcore. Gone are acid throated antiscreams. After duff opener "Blood Children", "Bleeding Mascara" rips a giant and gaping hole in the metal stream of consciousness with its swaggering guitar, heartfelt screams, and even more heart wrenching clean vocals. I don't think a band has pulled this much of an about face in years. It really is astounding. Lead throat Alex Varkatzas has clearly taken singing lessons, which improve his screams a hundred fold. Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel have improved their guitar playing, finding the fret board as opposed to the power chord. Brandon Saller has a more prominent vocal stance, complimenting Alex instead of taking away from him, as was the case on Atreyu's last album. And oh yeah, Saller also bangs away on the skins without mercy. Being an "emo" band without falling into the traps of the genre is a feat in and of itself. Transcending that rapidly rotting genre to embrace all that metal has to offer, emotions included, is nothing short of a miracle.
