Already their name tells a lot. Promising for some, while disturbing for others. What kind of effect does it have on me? I smiled. You may think, I have a weird sense of humor but reading their name and their album title, I immediately knew it'd be fun.

Bathtub Shitter comes from Japan and was formed in 1996. "Dance Hall Grind" is their second full-length album but they have lots of other kind of releases in their discography (check their homepage for that). Their music is a mix of thrash, death and grind and I would say, their style is hysterical. Not just because of the fast tempos and chaotic musical arrangements but becuse of their singer who sounds like a screaming cartoon or puppet character when he is not growling. According to the booklet, only one person is responsible for the vocals, Masato Henmarer Morimoto, who is actually one of the founding members of the band. Guttural growlings or insane screaming, he performs it perfectly.
Music-wise they tried to be varied: the crushing, grind madness might suddenly change into something more melodic and metallic, with memorable riffs. Their songs tend to be not only storming but massive and groovy too. The sound of the album is also good, a bit noisy and messy sometimes but it is just fitting for an underground grindcore work.
Lyrically they focused on pissing, shitting and stuff like that, so these subjects are not for you if you are too conventional.
There are also a few surprises on the album. The D.R.I. cover "Time Out", the instrumental "Shit Drop" and "Stihs Latem" the bonus track that they are playing backwards (read its title thoughtfully) and it probably is a hommage to Metallica.

I do like and respect bands like Napalm Death but I also enjoy bands like Bathtub Shitter or Gorerotted who are having and making some serious fun in this genre. And Bathtub Shitter is soon having a live album out! It's a pity I missed their show in July but hopefully they will soon return to Europe.
