Well, this line-up really promises to be great music! Uli Kusch (Masterplan, Ex-Helloween) on drums, Axel Mackenrott (Masterplan, Gamma Ray) on keys, Jorn Viggo Lofstad on guitar, Steinar Krokmo (both Pagan's Mind) on bass, and a more or less unknown vocalist from Belgium, named Magali Luyten. Some might say "no, not another gothic-like female-fronted project", but Beautiful Sin are quite far away from being gothic! On the other hand, this is a little too close to Masterplan, Uli's main band, so I don't really see the necessity of this release. Well, Magali's voice is good, reminds me a bit of Doro Pesch, but not that extraordinary.
The opener "Lost" is a tight song with a cool guitar riffing and some industrial sounds in the chorus, but the next song is more the way you expect the music to be if you look at the line-up. A somewhat bombastic intro, turning into a nice guitar-lead, cool bridge and kind of sing-along chorus. Same situation at "Take Me Home", another ordinary metalsong. "I'm Real" wold be way better, if there wouldn't be some drum-sounds that remind me very strongly of Masterplan's hit "Enlighten Me"... too bad! "Spark Of Ignition" is a bit more rough, but again nothing really special. The title "Closer To My Heart" really must be a ballad, and it is of course. Too much accoustic if you ask me, again nothing new here. "Give Up Once For All" is again a bit more rough, Magali's voice fits really good there (as I said, compared to Doro). "Brace For Impact" is more of an instrumental, a bit too 'spacy' for my taste, but in a way somehow catchy! If the lyrics of "Pechvogel (Unlucky Fellow)" wouldn't be that ridiculous, the song would really be one of the best, but that little German word really destroys it all!! "Metalwaves" is one of the better songs, played very tight, not too monotonous, enough variety and refreshing structure. The final and self-entitled instrumental "The Beautiful Sin" is again unnecessary, nothing to do with metal, just some piano sounds with a bit guitar-plucking and some synthesizers (more or less) in the background; not a good final at all!!
After all, I must say, I don't really need this CD, it doesn't have the class nor the catchiness of Masterplan or Pagan's Mind, unfortunately. But were my expectations too high once more??
