Band name: Before The Dawn. Home country: Finland. Musical style: gothic metal? Let's see!

I found the title of the disc "4.17 am" a little odd at first (reminded me of Liv Kristine's single "3 am" and I was expecting the worst already ;)) but then I noticed that the final song on their last album is called "4:16 am", so I consider it a funny idea to call the next album "4:17 am" :) But now finally on with the music.

The music doesn't exactly fit into the gothic category as I had assumed, the term dark metal seems somewhat more appropriate (one can argue that there's no difference in these two styles but to me there is ;)). I'm not really a fan of neither genre but I was at least happy to see they don't have a whiny female vocalist which is already a plus in my opinion. Another plus is the use of a clean voice (Panu Willman, also on guitar) as well as a grim voice (Tuomas Saukkonen, also on guitar).

The music ranges from 70's inspired rock over acoustic passages to heavy parts, really not bad! The whole album is melodic throughout, and if the second song "Seed" doesn't get some airplay on (rock) radio stations I don't know what other kind of radio compatible rock music they are looking for.

If there were some other band names to be dropped as a reference I guess I just had to mention Darkseed ("Heaven") and most of all Katatonia ("Into You" and actually a couple of other tracks), maybe sometimes even Sentenced. One of my favourite tracks is "My Room": starting off very calm and acoustic, the chorus is just mighty with both clean and grim vocals (in the vein of Katatonia's "Ghost Of The Sun") and from there it picks up speed just to fall back into the calmness of the beginning again. The heavy and quite straight-forward "The Black" and "Vengeance" (like the drumming on that one especially) are other highlights. Actually, the more I listened to "4:17 am" the more I started to like all tracks.

If you're looking for straight, melodic and catchy metal with a dark atmosphere, give these Finns a try!
