Beyond the Flesh is quiet a new band, hailing from New Jersey. They formed in 2000 and their first demo got a warm welcome among the local metalheads and the band gave gig after gig. In 2003 their first album, "What The Mind Perceives" was born and it has got an official release now, under the caring wings of Screaming Ferret Wreckords.
The first time I listened to their album I was not too impressed but after giving it a few more spins, I started to discover and see through their music. Obviously they are Carcass fans but they are also influenced by Euroepan thrash metal, in the vein of Destruction and Kreator and returning to their death metal side, we also have to mention Death. With sources like these they tend to have heavy, death metal orientated songs that tear your head off, while other songs are energetic thrash bombs that take the listeners by storm. Honestly I have the feeling they have not decided yet which way to take: Stay on the road of thrash metal or fully sink into death metal. Well, I would vote for the latter because Justin Leary's growling sounds dark and furious while his shrieks are not that marked. And the heavy, complexity intent death themes are more than enjoyable. They are combining the old-school and modern themes with a great sense, keeping the real death metal spirit but also giving it a fresh sound and impetus, together with the progressive and technical musical elements. So, their ability to play is beyond doubt, the only problem is that their influences are too obvious. Of course in case of a band whose debut album is under the microscope, it is not a drawback.
This is a really strong debut with well arranged songs and with quaility music. Only more recognizable, specific marks they need...and the future is shining bright for them. I will definitely keep an eye on them.
