Detroit Rock City? So it seems. The Black Dahlia Murder are a new band on the market, "Unhollowed" being their debut album. What do they offer? It's a mix of Swedish and Florida death metal plus a little thrash and hardcore influences thrown in.
The boring intro "Unhollowed" almost turnded me off though. It's supposed to be vocalist Trevor reading from a book on cannibalism with some music blending in after a minute. But then the first real song "Funeral Thirst" kicks in and shows what to expect: ripping death metal! Of the more melodic kind I have to add. Unlike some other bands in the genre The Black Dahlia Murder have no clean vocals or something that is close to clean vocals. Still there can be found two distinctive vocal styles on "Unhollowed", one being a deep growl and the other being a more high-pitched squeal. Great!
According to the label info the band draws their influences from bands like At The Gates, Dissection and Carcass. That pretty much sums up the mucical output of The Black Dahlia Murder. It's damn heavy and aggressive music, with even some blastbeat parts here and there. But the guitar work which is mostly "Swedish" and especially the twin guitar leads provide a nice amount of melody throughout the record.
The Black Dahlia Murder manage to keep the good standard throughout the record, without any real highlights though (and without any lows either). Promising band and recommended to fans of the genre or the aforementioned bands.
