After four years the Chicago based band is back with a new album, their second full-length effort. It is again released by Magic Circle Music, the label of Joey DeMaio (Manowar). I haven't followed the band's history in the past years but I recognized that they have two new members, Ryan Blazek "BLAZE" on drums and Chris Studtmann "CS" on bass guitar.
Last time I wrote: "their music is thrash-death based modern metal with some hardcore influences". Now I would say their music is modern hardcore metal with thrash and death metal roots. It consists of pounding double bass drums, shredding guitars, heavy, thick bass lines and shouted lyrics, with the slight taste of Biohazard, Soulfly, Machine Head and Pantera at times. Their whole approach is brutal and heavy but they tend to write too similar songs, so at the end one easily gets lost and doesn't know which song is on at that very moment. Also Marc Duca's vocals haven't really improved, it is still tame. Sometimes he tries to sound like Tom Araya but otherwise his voice is not characteristic and despite the shouting, it doesnt sound strong either.
Thousands of metal bands are out there today, playing old-school stuff or living up to the brand new metal trends. So in this dumping of metal bands of nowadays, you can make your living with playing average music, but if you want to be part of the history and form it, you should do something unique, in this case, playing original music. Well, Bludgeon is not making history yet. But anyway, if you are into metalcore, hardcore or modern metal, you can give it a try but if you don't, you won't miss too much.
