Kilpi is a band from Finland that plays melodic hardrock/80's heavy metal. And oh boy, do they play it well! For me Kilpi came out of nowhere, gaining some radio play in Finland during the spring with their hit song "Nerokasta Ikävää". The guitarist Pete Kilpi (hence the band name) is the main songwriter and he has come up with some nice and crispy riffs, but still the first impression of the album are the damn catchy choruses. He also recorded and produced the album himself and productionwise there are no reasons at all to complain. The singer of the band, Taage, is very good at what he does. There's the somewhat typical slight doze of hoarseness in his voice, which some hardrock vocalists are known for.

The music ranges from rock'n'roll to hardrock and traditional heavy metal and is occasionally layered with nice amounts of cheese, but I won't let that bother. There's very little new or innovative aspects (excluding the use of Finnish language naturally) here, but the overall result is accessible and very enjoyable. The songs and the arrangements are versatile enough so that the interest remains even after several listens. This certainly isn't that deep and/or thoughtful piece of art, but rather an enjoyable display of entertainment. "Samaan Aikaan Toisaalla", "Nerokasta Ikävää" and "Tähtien Lapset" definitey are the songs to check out on this one. Sadly though, for anyone interested in Kilpi outside Finland, it may be damn difficult to get hold of this album.
