Månegarm was formed in 1995 under the name Antikrist. A month later they changed it to Månegarm and half a year later they recorded their first demo, "Vargaresa". They started to record their second demo in February 1997, entitled "{Ur Nattvindar}". This demo caught the attention of Displeased Records who signed the band and released three Månegarm album since. And this year Displeased decided to give the opportunity to their fans to get the demos on one album. That is how "Vargaresa - The Beginning" was born.

Of course the demos have been remastered by Peter in de Betou and the "package" got a new cover picture, painted by Kris Verwimp. In the booklet the origianl artworks are still available, so there is nothing left one could complain about.

This compilation must be interesting for the Månegarm fans if they are interested in the past of the band. Though they might get surprised because Månegarm's early music is much rawer and hardly vikingish as we got to know them on their studio albums. Especially on the first demo where the emphasis was on black metal, traditional Scandinavian black metal. The folkish, vikingish elements appeared on their second demo though still rawer and grim than on their follow up works.

Till the new Månegarm album will be released – April 28th as it is promised – it is nice to give a listen to their beginning. It is recommended for every Månegarm fan.
