After already always liking rock as a kid, I really got into metal in 1981, so I'm celebrating my 25 years of listening to metal now! My first ever metal LP was Michael Schenker Group's first, my first metal shirt was the shirt of that album, etc. So it's extra special for me that Schenker himself also finds it time to celebrate these 25 years of MSG. Back in the 80's, I lost interest in MSG after 2 studioalbums and the "Live At Budokan", it got too soft for me and I never liked Bonnet... I didn't closely follow Schenker's carreer anymore, until he got signed by Armageddon and this promo landed in my mailbox. Theo of Rock Inc gave me the opportunity to interview the master, you can (soon) find that elsewhere on this site. Let's focus on the new CD here.
With this new album came a new singer, Jari Tiura from Finland. He wasn't so well known yet, but he fits the line of MSG singers very well! A warm, strong voice, just perfect for these songs. Several of them make my heart skip a beat again too, I hear a lot of the old atmosphere again. Of course Michael Schenker's guitar sound is still so recognizable and unsurpassed. My favorite songs are "The Ride", "Angel Of Avalon" with Leif Sundin on vocals, "Dust To Dust' (awesome riff, my favorite track!), "Journey Man", "Big Deal" with Kelly Keeling and "Live Vacation" with Gary Barden on vocals - which brings me to the concept and the performers on this special disc!
Initially these songs were written for a new UFO album, but when he didn't hear from Phil Mogg and got Jari's demo, Schenker knew what he wanted to do with it: make it into a concept album about "rock 'n' roll tales" for MSG's 25th anniversary and ask all his previous singers to do a song! This prestigious idea took a year but the result is worth it: all singers cooperated and did a great job! Leif Sundin sings on "Angel Of Avalon", Chris Logan did "Dreams Inside", Kelly Keeling "Big Deal", Gary Barden "Live Vacation", Graham Bonnet "Rock 'n' Roll" and Robin McAuley "Tell A Story". As Michael was in the studio for another project with UFO's Pete Way and Racer X's Jeff Martin, they ended up doing the bass and drums on this album. Wayne Findlay played guitar (incl. some trade-off solos on "Big Deal" and "Life Vacation") and keyboards.
If you ever had a thing for MSG in the past, this celebration CD is a must have for you!
