Exactly 7 years after their "Oblivion Days", Rocket Scientists are impressively back with a double cd full of progressive rock jewels to listen to and enjoy.
Founding members Erik Norlander (keyboards), Marc McCrite (guitar and vocals) and Don Schiff (bass, N/S stick) have been recording demos since 2002 but it never came to a studio effort to follow up on "Oblivion Days". Following some gigs the band did around Los Angeles, sadly, drummer Shaun Guerin passed away in 2003 which was another setback for the band and a big loss for Rocket Scientists.
After the last tour of Lana Lane and Erik Norlander & Friends in 2005 a lot of time was spent on listening to demos that had been made since 2002 and to some live material recorded throughout the years. Surprisingly, a live gig recording still featuring Shaun Guerin had enough quality to fit in live played drumming parts in Simon Philips' drums on "Better View". Gregg Bissonette plays drums on the remaining songs.
David McBee is the other revelation on this album, adding his powerful vocals to the more smooth and melodic vocals of Mark McCrite.
When you listen to this album, it is mainly the peaceful atmosphere and the brilliant musicianship that grabs you, and Erik Norlander's production qualities again stand out. Examples of comparison? Think Pink Floyd, think Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Moody Blues.. If your musical taste is more in the (hard)rock tradition, it will be a real challenge to listen to this masterpiece, finding out more about the musical spectrum. This album does NOT make you headbang. Rocket Scientists are more about a mixture of (heavy) atmospheres, rhythmic contrasts and various themes.
Naming favourite songs in this case is nearly impossible so if you are into this type of music, you will have to listen to both discs in one time and consume its impact afterwards. OK?
Check out some samples on their MySpace website.
