Q: How long have I been waiting for the new album by one of my few favourite melodic metal bands?
A: Too long!
I still remember when I blindly bought Vanishing Point's last album "Tangled In Dream" just because I had read a very postive review about the album. A few live gigs followed in 2001 and ever since I have been waiting for the new album, that was still titled "A Life Less" a year ago or so.
With great anticipation I recently checked out the first samples available on the band's website which left me a little confused over to what to expect from "Embrace The Silence". I remember that one of my initial thoughts was that Vanishing Point went a little too much into the "euro-speed" metal direction - perhaps the tour with Sonata Arctica and Gamma Ray hasn't done them good after all!? I decided to wait for the actual release to see what I feel when I have the finished product in my hands.
And it hurts to say that I'm slightly disappointed with the final outcome. In fact, I'm still confused.
On one hand, most of the choruses are so easy to get into that you can sing along to them during the first listen. On the other hand, i find some of the compositions simply too lengthy and not getting to the point. Almost 80 minutes of playing time in total - I never thought I would think that there actually can be too much music on one album.
But of course I don't only want bitch about the new album. Nor do I need to as there's still plenty of good music on "Embrace The Silence". It's just that I like the darker approach of the songs on "Tangled In Dream" much more and that's what I love the band for. And it's not like Vanishing Point totally lost those abilites over night as they prove with "Seasons Of Sundays" for instance.
Also, as I'm a sucker for vocals, Silvio again delivers an awesome performance. He's still enchanting with his pleasant smooth voice that he luckily doesn't force into new heights.
For me, "Tangled In Dream" is still the number one reference when it comes to Vanishing Point.
