   CATTLE DECAPITATION
Travis Travis Ryan
Juni 2004

I got the chance to do an e-mail interview with Cattle Decapitation's Travis. They have a new album coming out entitled "Humanure", the artwork work of this album caused quite a stir in Germany. Here's what Travis had to say.

Hell-o, what's the latest news?

New album. Tons of touring coming up. It's going to be a busy year!

Your new record "Humanure" will be out on July 13th, what are your comments on this album? Well, we took a lot longer to record this one than the last one, so it's light years better than "To Serve Man". We have a new drummer on it, Michael Laughlin, and that adds a lot. It's very melodic yet still brutal, kind of like the song "Chunk Blower" on "To Serve Man". It's a very listenable album compared to some of our earlier stuff I would say.

How would you compare this album to Cattle Decapitation's previous works?

Haha.. I just did! It still has the Cattle vibe but much more "death metal" and catchy songs. This album is actually all over the place whereas To Serve Man was a little more straight ahead.

Once again, your cover artwork is causing some trouble and the album got banned in Germany. What are your feelings about this?

It pisses me off. We were told it probably wasn't going to be banned by SPV and it happened again. It's not really "banned" technically, they just refuse to take their chances like they did in the early days of Cannibal Corpse and bands like Carcass. They'll get shut down over shit like this I guess. Pretty lame, but there's less crime in those parts of Europe so they're doing something right.

Do you guys get into a lot of trouble because of your artwork & lyrics generally?

We seem to in Europe I guess. They're not into making our album covers public. Lyrically, no problems yet. I think people don't read them enough. They must think if we're vegetarians, we must be talking about lettuce and shit. They don't realize that I've stated the general public needs to be destroyed. Hahaha.

What are your influences, music wise?

Old shit like Carcass, Repulsion, Napalm Death, a lot of black metal, rock, whatever… we've always listened to all sorts of different stuff. The other guys in the band come from more of a hardcore/grind/punk background but always listened to metal. There's all sorts of shit in there.

Can Cattle Decapitation be compared to another death/gore metal band?

Cattle Decapitation People always compare us to Carcass for some weird reason. There are so many other bands that sound exactly like Carcass, I think it's pointless to compare us, or call us Carcass-clones. We have too many drastic time changes and frantic elements to really compare us to Cannibal Corpse, but I would think lyrically and some of the music wise, you could maybe do that too.

Are there any bands you would like to go on tour with?

Disgorge from Mexico. A tour with them in Mexico/South America and then over to Europe would be insane. That'd probably be too much actually. Haha.. At least it'd be really extreme.

Which is the best Cattle Decapitation gig, and why?

The New England Metal And Hardcore festival was a crazy one for us. Which was weird because fests almost always suck to play at. The best though are always our shows in Orange County/Los Angeles. The Human Jerky record release party was the first show I remember thinking was really insane. Ah, I just thought of another. Tijuana, Mexico. I have a tape of it. It was fucking completely nuts. We played with the Locust and the place went crazy.

Your band members are involved in various side projects, can this affect the band?

No. We've kind of chilled out on doing side projects. No real time to do anything. We're always thinking of bands we'd like to start. Like I'd love to do an Indian inspired band, in the same way Nile uses Egyptian imagery, it'd be awesome to start a band that has a South Indian flavor. I'd call it "Naan" and all the songs would be about Hindu mythology and Indian cuisine. Or a "Lawyer metal" band that uses law terminology the same way Carcass uses medical terminology. That'd be awesome.

What are your plans for the near future?

Touring out the ass and hopefully making it to Europe this year. It better fuckin' happen soon, I'm dying to get over there. Japan too.

Last but not least, any words for all your fans?

Stay gore!

Ok, thanx a lot for your time and input!!!

Thanks a lot to you too man! See you soon I hope!
