INTERNAL SUFFERING
|
Andrés García
May 2005

I recently got the opportunity to do an interview with one of my favorite death metal bands, Internal Suffering. I’d heard about them before and I really got into them when I had the opportunity to do a review of their latest album entitle “Choronzonic Force Domination”, a killer album filled with brutality. During this interview I spoke with Andrés García and we discussed several topics like working with Erik Rutan, their favorite bands and the wise cracks made about their country of origin. Enjoy!
I'm currently listening to your new album, amazing stuff! Very fast & brutal. What can you tell me about the new album (compared to the previous ones, production quality etc.)?
Hello Brian! Thanks a lot for the killer compliments on the new album, I'm glad you liked it! Well, when compared to our previous efforts, I think this new opus is more mature, well structured and better produced than the other ones hence the final result. We felt there was a lot of potential lost in the other records due to the somehow muddy/dirty recordings (which we love though), so we decided it was time for an over-the-top production with Erik Rutan in the production/engineering seat!
Yes, Erik Rutan of Hate Eternal produced your third full length album "Choronzonic Force Domination", how did that come to be?
As explained before, we felt it was time for a better, high quality production, so we told Displeased about our idea of using Erik as producer of the album and they loved they idea. Afterwards, we contacted Erik and he was immediately into it!
What was it like working with him?
It was such a great experience, you know, working with a guy that has played in awesome bands like Hate Eternal, Ripping Corpse, Morbid Angel and has worked with bands like Krisiun, Malevolent Creation, among many more is just incredible. Besides being an impressive death metal producer/engineer, he's a great person and unconditional friend, recording with him was like hanging out with your buddies, we felt like home and can't wait to be back again!
Why did you guys decide to sign with Dutch label Displeased Records?
They sent us the best deal out of 4-5 potential labels that were also interested at the moment, so we obviously chose their offer.
What bands have influenced you personally? And the rest of the band?
Mmmm, that's a tough one, some influential bands could be: Suffocation, Deeds Of Flesh, Immolation, Nile, Angel Corpse, Cryptopsy, Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Krisiun, Incantation… Also, we're huge fans of 80's/ancient thrash-death metal as that's the music we started listening to, so most of those cult bands are huge influences for us as well.
Is Internal Suffering influenced by any band or belief?
Bands are listed above plus tons old stuff that we truly worship like Possessed, Dark Angel, old Slayer, early Exodus, Exorcist, old Death, Kreator, Sodom, Violent Force, Virus, Destruction, Razor, Exciter... the list is endless! As for beliefs, we don't follow any kind of religion but we're very interested in ancient history, mythology, occultism and in the works/legacy of writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Aleister Crowley, Dr. John Dee, among tons more.
Is there any band that you guys would like to get the chance to go on tour with?
Mmm, another tough one, could be bands like Suffocation, Deeds Of Flesh, Morbid Angel, Nile, Deicide, Disgorge (USA), Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Incantation, Immolation…
What's the latest CD you bought?
Death Metal: Deeds Of Flesh "Crown Of Souls" / Hate Eternal "I, Monarch"
Other(s): Metal Church "The Dark" / Ozzy Osbourne "Diary Of A Madman".
What's your all time favorite album?
Well, I'd have to name at least 20 albums!! I can't really name just 1! Some of my all time faves are Exodus "Bonded By Blood", Death "Scream Bloody Gore", Slayer "Show No Mercy", Dark Angel "Darkness Descends", Morbid Angel "Domination", Iron Maiden "Powerslave", Carcass "Necroticism…", Deicide "s/t", Immolation "Dawn Of Possession", Possessed "Seven Churches", Sarcofago "I.N.R.I.", Cryptopsy "None So Vile", Deeds Of Flesh "Inbreeding The Antropophagi", Suffocation "Effigy Of The Forgotten", Incantation "Onward To Golgotha" and I could go on forever!!
How's the death metal scene in Colombia?
It rules!! Tons of killer bands and a lot of support from fans, our scene is perhaps one of the most brutal and strongest nowadays!
Do you guys have to deal with a lot of lame comments or jokes because you're Colombians?
Hell yeah, all the time, we don't care about it though, as long as they don't offend us. Funny thing is that people who make these jokes have never been to Colombia and if they go some day they'll fall in love with it right away!!
Besides Internal Suffering are there any other Colombian death metal bands we should look out for?
Yeah of course, these are some killer bands that deserve a lot of support: Carnal, Ancient Necropsy, Nihil Obstat, Souledge, Masacre, Witchtrap, Nightmare, Mindly Rotten, Horncrowned, among others.
Any final words?
Thanks a lot for this space in your killer mag. Also, thanks a lot to all of you reading this interview, don't hesitate to visit our website at www.internalsuffering.com to keep updated on all the latest band's activities!
Once again, thanks for the support and stay metal!
