Jan Röder
June 2006

If you want to hear some modern thrash with several other influences then you should check out the symphathetic Germans of Koroded. Diverse in their music as well as the vocals, topped off with a powerful production of Jacob Bredahl - you can't go wrong there. I wanted to know more about this band and asked singer Jan Röder some questions...
Your style has evolved since the first album, what caused the changes and how were the reactions (media and fans) to it?
We always write what comes on our mind. This is the only way for us to write songs. Compared to the last album the new one sounds more rough and aggressive, but also more melodic. We have that second guitarist now which offers us a lot of new possibilities for guitar-lines and also weird stuff. Two guitars are just more dynamic and more melodic and it's more heavy when you play live. When we wrote the songs to the album we all went through a hard time. My relationship fell apart and we split with our bassplayer. I think this also had a great influence on the songwriting. The songs therefore sound more rough and aggressive and brutal. The reactions are cool so far. Especially live we get great response from our fans. It's unbelievable how many people on tour knew the song "Zero Minus Zero" from the internet. On every show there were people singing along. Just awesome!!!
Jan, your vocals are very diverse, how do you keep your voice in shape?
I just practise a lot and I am doing this for years. At the beginning I wasn't that good and I developed my abilities over the years. Two years ago I also had some singing lessons which helped a lot to improve my vocals. On tour I warm up a lot before every show. Especially on the last tour this was important, because we were on the road for more then 30 days with just 3 day offs.
Who are your influences, Jan, I bet you have heard the comparison to Rob Flynn before?
Oh hear that a lot. It is just my natural voice. We do not sound that similar. People just have to compare stuff all the time. It is just the way I sing and always sang and always will sing. My influences as a singer are Mike Patton and Phil Anselmo. These guys are gods. It just love it. For the lyrics Mike Muir from Suicidal has influenced me a lot. I listen to a lot of music. Not just heavy music. I love almost everything. It just has to touch me in a way.
What's your inspiration for your lyrics?
I can be inspired by books, movies, things that happen in my life, by politics, by feelings… Often it is a combination of all these aspects. Emotion is always important. Even when I write about politics I do it with a very personal note. Some songs on the last record have been inspired by George Orwell's 1984 for example. Some others are just very emotional and describe my feelings about my relationship. Only good friends will understand what exactly I am talking about here.
For the band in general, what or who are your influences musically?
A lot of Bay Area-thrash from the 90s. Death metal, hardcore, grindcore. If I should name some bands I would say Fear Factory, Deftones, Sepultura, Machine Head, Obituary, Crowbar, Martyr AD… All the band members have their own taste of music and we all bring our influences into the band. This is just what creates the sound and you ask the other guys what they listen to, because I am not that sure (c;
How does the songwriting process usually go?
Most times I meet with our guitar players and we jam a little and try to combine some ideas. When we have some rough arrangements we go to the rehearsal room and try it out with our drummer. Sometimes we also have spontaneous ideas that become songs.
How did you end up signing with Silverdust?
The owner of Silverdust knows us for a long time already. After we released our last EP he just had to sign us haha.
How was it to record with Jacob Bredahl?
It was awesome. Jacob is a great guy and a great musician. We learned a lot from him in many ways while we recorded the album. I am so happy about the decision and about the result. Working with Jacob was very relaxed and a lot of fun.
Where did you find your new guitarist Frank Fleckenstein? Did he already have an influence on the songwriting of the album?
Half of the songs were already written when Frank came into the band. But we still changed them a lot. On the other songs you can definitely hear his handwriting. He came along very well with our guitarist Andreas and the ideas grew pretty quick when they played guitar together. I am looking forward to write a new album now from zero on with him.
How was your recent tour with Betzefer?
Oh it was just awesome. We travelled through almost whole Europe and had fantastic shows everywhere. Betzefer and us became great friends which is maybe the nicest aspect of that tour. Beside that we had the possibility to play in countries like England and Scotland where we did not play that much before. France was also great and we made a lot of fans there. Yesterday we played in Nancy with Exodus and met a lot of people from the tour again. This tour was the best we had so far and we all cannot wait to be on the road again!!
Are you still looking for a new bassplayer? Falko from the Riots was "just" a fill-in for the tour, right?
Yes we are still looking for a bass-player. Falko just helped us out. The Riots just released their debut album and you should check it out. They are a great band!!! We played a show with another guy from Cologne yesterday and it was awesome. Maybe he will stay in the band. Who knows!?
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Write a new album and go on tour again. That's all so far (c;
