ARNHEM METAL MEETING
|
Musis Sacrum - Arnhem (NL)
December 4th 2004
www.arnhemmetalmeeting.nl
On Saturday 24th of December Arnhem Metal Meeting made its debut.
Despite the fact that there are already lot of metal festivals, Arnhem Metal Meeting turned out to be a huge success. Over a 1000 metal heads were present there and there was also a small metal market in the building. Unlike other festivals, Arnhem Metal Meeting had a tight schedule. As soon as one band finished their set on one stage another other band immediately started playing on the other. This was great because the fans didn't have to wait for the bands to do their soundcheck ect.
The only downside was that you had to be quick in order to stand in the front; there was no photo pit so it was very difficult to take pictures.
The first band that took the second stage was Dutch folk metal band HEIDEVOLK.
They immediately drew the attention of everyone in the room. Their customs reminded me of Finntroll. Armed with shields and swords the two vocalists greeted each other and the band started to play. Since I'm really not into folk metal type music I wasn't really interested in this band. People who like this type of music really got a treat watching Heidevolk perform though.
In the beginning I found the songs monotonous and boring but when they added a little speed and variation it sounded pretty good. So far, a good start to Arnhem Metal Meeting.
The first band to debut on the main stage was Holland's own GOD DETHRONED.
I recently did a review of their latest album "The Lair Of The White Worm" and I really wanted to hear a few of those tracks live. God Dethroned drew a respectable crowd but only played 30 minutes. The only "old face" in the band was the one from front man Henri Sattler.
God Dethroned played a tight set but the sound wasn't good, they played a mix of old songs and songs from their new album. My favourite songs of their set were: "Villa Vampiria" and "Nihilism". Besides the sound problem, I really enjoyed their performance.
After God Dethroned we headed back to the second stage see to another Dutch band, namely INHUME. We have never seen them perform live before, but we knew what to expect.
Inhume gave an energetic performance and the won the crowd over. They played a few songs from their latest album "In For The Kill" and also a few classics. My favourite songs were: "Inhume" and "Fucking Shit". The two vocalists and the band made the crowd go wild and woke up everybody with their extreme playing style. No one was sleeping anymore at Arnhem Metal Meeting.
German black/trash metal band DESASTER were the next ones to perform on the main stage.
Just like God Dethroned, Desaster also had sound problems. But that didn't keep them from putting on an aggressive performance. The crowd's reaction to this band was 50/50; some of the people were really into them while others just stood with their arms crossed over waiting for the next band. Despite their sound problem I liked their performance, if the sound was better I'd guarantee that they would have had a livelier crowd.
Back at the second stage another band that I was curious to see perform live were getting ready to hit the stage. None other that GOREROTTED! Their performance was very brutal and barbaric. These guys really know how make the crowd go wild. Although it seemed like the band members had one too many to drink, it didn't hinder their performance one bit. I like their style of music, very aggressive, no melody just a full on frontal attack of grindcore.
Gorerotted were one of the most energetic bands of that night and the crowd enjoyed every minute of their performance.
1349 were the only black metal band performing at Arnhem Metal Meeting. It's pretty logical that there weren't a lot of black metal fans present tonight. 1349's performance was pretty good and the crowd were pretty much into them. Smeared in corpse paint this Norwegian act gave the true black metal fans out there a real treat. If there were more black metal bands present tonight I think the crowd would have been twice the size it was for 1349.
When Primordial were ready to begin we took a break. We went to get something to eat and ended up waiting like 40 minutes to get some food. When we finally got back, IMPALED NAZARENE just started with their set. Again this band didn't disappoint the fans.
Their set consisted of very fast and brutal songs, each and every one of them played very tight! They had a few "slower" songs in their repertoire; a good example would be "Total War". When the crowd heard the intro of the last song they knew immediately which one it was. My favourite Impaled Nazarene song was "Karmageddon Warriors".
After Impaled Nazarene finished their set, the legendary death metal act SUFFOCATION entered the stage.
It's very clear that they were the crowd's favourites at Arnhem Metal Meeting. I think that Suffocation should have been the headlining band tonight. One word to describe their performance: mind blowing!!! They played songs from their recent album "Souls To Deny" and a few songs from "Effigy Of The Forgotten". The crowd went insane during their performance; people were moshing and head banging to all the songs. Suffocation unleashed hell during their set.
I have no complaints about their performance, even the sound was great.
After being blown away by the performance of Suffocation we took another break and walked around the metal market. After walking around we went back to the second stage to wait for UNLEASHED to start. Unleashed played a very impressive set, but some of the songs sounded a bit monotonous to me. Their sound was great and I liked a few of the songs they played. We couldn't stay for the entire set because we had to take a train and travel one hour to get back home. Arnhem Metal Meeting was a success and we enjoyed it very much!
