ARCH ENEMY - ZYKLON - STAMPIN' GROUND
Arch Enemy © Nico Wobben Live Music Hall - Cologne (D)

We arrived in Cologne way early (we left home early to avoid traffic jams) and had a good Italian dinner in a place near the venue. When the doors of the venue opened we went in, but the gig started a bit later than scheduled because Stampin' Ground (and I believe Zyklon too) were still on their way from England with their gear (this was the first date of the tour). When they arrived they quickly set up their stuff and got on the stage like 5 minutes later.

Stampin' Ground © Nico Wobben So yeah, STAMPIN' GROUND's gig was a little hasty as Mobs would call it later on. I guess first dates on a tour are never all that, but they did a good job anyway. There was a lot of energy coming from that stage, but this (mostly metal-)audience wasn't too used to the metalcore of SG. I have to say the venue wasn't even half-packed so that wasn't helping either. SG had some fans there too though, plus singer Adam managed to get part of the metalheads go crazy and they all formed small moshpits. The band played a.o. "Don't Need A Reason To Hate" (where Adam first calls out for a moshpit), "Dead From The Neck Up", Adam's favorite "Bear The Scars" (all from "A New Darkness Upon Us"), "Everybody Owes A Death" and the intense "Officer Down", both from the predecessor "Carved From Empty Words". All considered a pretty good show, but not enough fire for Adam to surf the crowd like he usually likes to do.

Zyklon © Nico Wobben After the gig I was taken to the back to do an interview with Mobs of Stampin' Ground, which was really great. Very symphathetic and funny guy! I should've scheduled it better though, because now I missed all of ZYKLON's gig. I only heard the first few songs from outside the hall, it sounded heavy and fast, a mix of death, thrash and black and I wish I was inside. I don't know their albums but heard good things about them. I didn't hear really good things about the gig though, several people said the set was kinda boring and they expect more from it. Maybe again because of it being the first night, first time to use the gear and all that? After the show they sat in the same little one-couch room I was doing the interview in and I asked the guys for autographs (which I hardly ever do) for my Canadian friend who's a big fan:) Only much later I realized I sat there in the company of a few Emperor legends *notworthy* hehehe...

Arch Enemy © Nico Wobben My interview ended halfway into the ARCH ENEMY gig (I remember starting to headbang there at "We Will Rise" hehe), but the part I still saw was great as usual! Songs like "Bury Me An Angel", "Ravenous" (dedicated to the moshers out there) and three encores (including the beautiful "Snow Bound" and "Enemy Within") were performed very well, the band has become so tight with all the touring they do, that I'm sure they never play a bad gig. Angela was being the perfect metal frontlady in this town, her hometown Cologne, and vocal performance blew me away as always. Only thing that really disappointed me was the length (or rather "shortness") of their gig... including 3 encores they played no more than 65 minutes!! That's not really what the audience expected of a headliner tour...
