At about 8 pm, SHADOWS FALL entered the stage. The five neo-thrashers from the States played only 35 minutes, but they appeared to be a tight band in a good mood, and they had fun; so did the fans!
The very agile vocalist was jumping around on the stage all the time, and he even stage-dived into the crowd. Altogether, the band played seven songs, they even played a bit death metal, all together a good opening act.
Setlist:
1. Fleshold
2. Thoughts Without Words
3. Idle Hands
4. Stepping Outside The Circle
5. Destroyer Of Senses
6. Of One Blood
7. God Without Words
Then it was SOILWORK's turn. The expectations were quite high because the just published record "Figure Number Five" had got excellent reviews.
They started off with a song of that album, "Light The Torch", and the crowd went crazy. Then the Swedish thrashers added the titletrack of the 2002-output "Natural Born Chaos". They played only one track of the first three albums, "Needlefeast" of "A Predator's Portrait" (record number three), but nevermind, the fans were happy with the newer stuff. Fronter Björn "Speed" Strid in his usual outfit (a red Ferrari-racing-shirt) looked quite unusual for a metalhead, but the music kicked ass indeed!!
The rest of the show (Soilwork played nine tracks all together) was stunning as well, the titeltrack of the new album was a real headbanger and the opener of "NBC", "Follow The Hollow" did the rest.
All thumbs up for the live-performance of Soilwork, maybe we can expect another album in 2004, but before that, I am looking forward to see them at the W:O:A 2003 !!!
Setlist:
1. Light the Torch
2. Natural Born Chaos
3. Needlefeast
4. Rejection Role
5. As We Speak
6. Figure Number Five
7. Follow The Hollow
8. The Bringer
9. Distortion Sleep
At about 10 pm it was time for the headliners, for CHILDREN OF BODOM, the Finnish band, whose music is very hard to discribe. Is it melodic death metal? Is it just power metal with "unusual" vocals? Well, that's not the point here actually. ;-)
The kids started off with the opener of the current album "Hate Crew Deathroll", "Needled 24/7". The sound of the guys around singer and guitarist Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho was very good, the musical performance almost perfect, and the atmosphere was great; the fans were with the young band, who nevertheless already have a lot of routine.
And they brought all the hits. "Hate Me!", the single of the third studio-output "Follow The Reaper", and indeed they played seven (!!!) of the nine songs of the new record. Only "Triple Corpse Hammerblow" and "Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood" wasn't played, but there also were "Silent Night, Bodom Night" and "Everytime I Die", which was dedicated to Finntroll guitarist Somnium who recently passed away. Also I should mention the jamming from Alexi and keyboarder Janne Wirman, containing a spontaneus live-version of the Stratovarius-hit "Eagleheart". "Hate Crew Deathroll" and "Downfall" were the last songs of the show, which only lasted about 85 minutes, but was a very good concert all together.
Setlist:
1. Needled 24/7
2. Hate Me!
3. Chokehold (Cocked & Loaded)
4. Silent Night, Bodom Night
5. Lake Bodom
6. Better Off Dead
7. Bodom After Midnight
8. Sixpounder
9. Angels Don't Kill
10. Towards Dead End
11. Keyboard / Guitar-Jamming (incl. Eagleheart)
12. Bodom Beach Terror
13. Mini-Drumsolo
14. Everytime I Die
15. Hate Crew Deathroll
16. Downfall
Another thing I want to say is that the merchandising-caravan had closed at the end of the show, the bands had a loss of a couple of Euros some fans (including myself) would have had spend...
