DYNAMO OPEN AIR 2004
|
Goffertpark - Nimeguen (Nijmegen, NL)
June 5th 2004
http://www.dynamo.nl
On this day we had to wake up pretty early, we still needed to grab a train and sit an hour or so just to arrive in Nijmegen. The one thing I don't understand is why this festival keeps changing from location. It didn't really matter because this was going to be our first Dynamo Open Air ever. Here's what happened that day.
When we finally found the place we had to look for the press entrance, we walked around and asked the people who worked there but no one knew. We walked that whole field twice and still didn't get an answer. Finally we met up with some other people from the press who were also looking for a way to get in. After waiting for the security guard to check with his other colleagues we finally got in.
By the time we got in a lot people were already at Stage 1, we really weren't interested in seeing SHADOWS FALL. Those who like this type of music enjoyed themselves and those who didn't just stood with there with there arms crossed.
After seeing a few songs we moved on to Stage 2.
Because we left early we got to stand pretty close to the stage, the first band to play on Stage 2 was MASTODON. This is the first time I heard them, they played an aggressive type of metal with a few "strange" parts melted into it. I really liked their guitarist, he was doing some really cool stuff on his guitar.
After they finished their set most of the people went back to Stage 1, we had no interest in seeing ILL NINO, none what so ever. Ill Nino drew a pretty big crowd and the fans were really enjoying their performance. There was a pretty big crowd at Stage 1, but we were happy standing at Stage 2 waiting for the next band to hit the stage.
While Mastodon were doing their performance, I could see DEICIDE drummer Steve Asheim putting his drum-set together. They were the next ones to perform on Stage 2. They played a very tight and aggressive set. There were quite a few people and there was a also a pit (finally). They played both old and new songs, here are a few of the songs
they played: "They Are The Children Of The Underworld", "Dead But Dreaming", "Serpents Of The Light", "Bible Basher", "Once Upon The Cross" and they finished their set with their new hit "Scars Of The Crucifix". I think Deicide was the best band at Dynamo Open Air 2004!
After Deicide we went to Stage 1 but couldn't get close to the stage. Finnish sensation CHILDREN OF BODOM ready to rock the crowd. They were one of the favourites at Dynamo Open Air 2004. The only number I recognized was "Needled 24/7". From what I saw they were very energetic on stage and the crowd loved them.
After we tried to see C.O.B. my colleague had an interview with After Forever front woman Floor Jansen. While Miche was doing her interview I decided to take a break and walk around. While walking around and
checking out the metal market I saw a bunch of guys dressed in white (Oomph!) jumping around and playing happy music at Stage 2. I was glad I took my break!
Back at Stage 1, SOULFLY took the stage. They also drew a very big and energetic crowd, I'm not a fan but I liked the Sepultura numbers they played.
After her interview I met up with Miche again and we went to Stage 2 to see AFTER FOREVER. This was the first time we saw them with their new keyboardist Joost v.d. Broek. They played a very good set and they also did an Iron Maiden cover which was pretty awesome. They drew a pretty respectable crowd and gave an electric performance.
Another band I wasn't interested in seeing was LIFE OF AGONY, so we went to get a few hot dogs & of course beer!
After eating and sitting in the press/V.I.P. area we headed back to Stage 2 to see DIMMU BORGIR. The crowd wasn't that big at their stage, everyone was at Stage 1 waiting for Nightwish to take the stage. Dimmu Borgir put on a great show, very energetic and the crowd was really into it. They played old songs and new songs, here are a couple of them: "Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse", "Cataclysm Children", "Mourning Palace", "Inside
The Catharsis", "Spell Bound" and "Vredesbyrd". We also got to see their new session drummer, well I'm impressed. He had some pretty difficult shoes to fill but he managed to do a great job!
We couldn't see NIGHTWISH perform because their crowd was simply too BIG!
Because we live pretty far from Nijmegen, we couldn't stay for the whole SLAYER set. We only saw a few songs and we saw the band in miniature size so that it was pretty difficult enjoy the show. The songs we heard were: "War
Ensemble", "Necrophiliac", "At Dawn They Sleep"
and 2 more songs from their new album.
After that is was time to leave and we headed back home. Hopefully we'll be back next year!!!
This review was only recently written for the gazillionth time because of serious computer problems - pictures were kindly supplied by SILVY ROOS (Aardschok, Dynamo Roadshow etc)! Thanks so much!!!
