   EVERGREY
Matrix - Bochum (D)
May 4th 2005

http://www.evergrey.net

I have always wanted to witness an Evergrey acoustic gig but until now I have never been fortunate enough to actually make it to one of the gigs. I once missed a show in Sweden by about a week or so and the rest has simply always been "out of reach".
Evergrey © Cora Gonser But to promote their soon to be released DVD "A Night To Remember", Evergrey also came to Germany for some so called "DVD events" and now that Evergrey were close enough I of course went to see them in Bochum.

But before the acoustic gig started we got to see about an hour of the DVD, one hour of concert footage to be more precise. This I have to say because the DVD will feature many hours worth of bonus material but more about this in a second ;) As you will probably know, Evergrey recorded a gig in their hometown Gothenburg/Sweden back in October 2004 and since I have attended that very gig (see my review here if you like) this DVD will be a very special treat for me. "A Night To Remember" - I'll forever be able to recall it by simply putting a DVD into a player :) But also those who did not have the chance to be there should get a very good idea of the atmosphere at this gig as many cameras captured the whole scenery (e.g. old theatre, choir, string quartet) pretty well. A short preview of the DVD in form of a part of the song "More Than Ever" can be downloaded from the band's website at this location if you're interested and can't wait anymore.

Evergrey © Cora Gonser After the screening of the DVD had stopped, we went over to the next room where the "stage" had been prepared with a small drumkit, a couple of bar stools and a keyboard. I was quite pleased with how many people had shown up by the way. The place wasn't packed but there was still a nice amount of people gathering around the stage from all sides and angles. The band came, everybody took his position and off they went with "As I Lie Here Bleeding". Evergrey were very relaxed and in fantastic mood as I could tell by Tom's joking around. It was just pure fun to see them playing like this for a change. "I'm Sorry" turned out way better than last week as support for LaBrie - no wonder as the people really have been here to see Evergrey, knew the lyrics and thus were able to sing along in unison. Great! :) Tom said they had not prepared all too many songs for these acoustic gigs and so the seventh song "Recreation Day" should already be the last one!?! Evergrey © Cora GonserLuckily it didn't take too much persuasion for them to play one more track and so the closing song was - after some discussion - "Words Mean Nothing", during which Tom stood a level up between some fans most of the time.
I heard a lot of people praising the band, how much fun it was and how great the guys are. What else can I do but agree? :)

setlist:
As I Lie Here Bleeding
Misled
A Touch Of Blessing
I'm Sorry
Blinded
Waking Up Blind
Recreation Day
Words Mean Nothing

Evergrey © Cora Gonser After the acoustic gig you had the chance to either grab one (or all) of the guys for questions, autographs or preferrably beers - or you went back to the room you had come from to see some of the DVD's bonus material. Now, I rather chose chatting here and there and didn't see all too much of this as I had already seen a lot of the drunken offstage madness last week when Micke was kind enough to show us (Marlies, Nico and myself) some assorted highlights ("oh, and you have to see this!") picked out of many hours (!) worth of bonus material.
Fans are gonna love this stuff, it's hilarious!
