One of the things I really wanted for our holiday in Canada was to see the Regina (Saskatchewan) band Dirtbred live. Unfortunately a local show with several good bands could only be planned during the period that we'd be out of town. And even though cruising the Rocky Mountains with a motorhome is a pretty good excuse, I was glad to hear upon our return to Regina, that our friends of Into Eternity AND Dirtbred would be playing an extra show the next day in Saskatoon!
So.. in the early afternoon we drove through the prairies to Saskatoon, about 2½ hours from Regina. We stopped at a music store in town, where I taped a short video of Tim shredding on a banjo hehehe (you can see that clip, more background info on this gig and some more Into Eternity related stuff at our personal Canada vacation report!). Anyway, after the usual waiting, eating and soundchecking, it was time to rock! Sparky © Nico Wobben

Local heroes SPARKY started at around 10pm I believe, and put on a good set. A bit more hardcore than what I like and I wasn't too crazy about Nealz' vocals, but the music was very intense and technical, with also some more quiet moments, parts with clean vocals and it was even a bit jazzy at times. Keep an eye on these guys, I believe their second CD is supposed to come out before the end of the year.

Dirtbred © Nico Wobben DIRTBRED is known to get the wildest crowds and moshpits at their shows. And even though I hate moshpits, I was of course curious enough to want to see it with my own eyes. And yes, they were great! Very energetic band, playing mostly fast grind/death metal, with hardcore influences and some other elements. I loved to finally see Donnie on stage and he was so sweet to mention us during the gig. "We have some people here who came all the way across the planet from Deutschland, Germany..." and then Troy tried to correct it "Erm, actually, it's Holland!!" hahaha! Donnie was so ashamed afterwards hehe, he won't forget in his life where we're from;) Luckily for me there was no moshpit, not a lot of people came out to the Roxy on this wednesday night. I didn't really pay much attention to the setlists this evening (nor did I take notes), but I recognized a bunch of songs from their demo.

Into Eternity © Nico Wobben By the time INTO ETERNITY played, the volume of the music had been turned up a few times, it was way too distorted. But it was fun anyway, and cool to see new recruits Dean (vocals, Within Another) and Adam on a stage. Dean's still growing into the leadsinger role (he plays guitar as well in his own band) but it all worked out well. No two singers are the same, but Dean's voice fits the others perfectly. Roque of Dirtbred joined them for the final song Sell God, that was cool. Different (he has a higher voice) but cool:) I think there were 60 or so people in front of the stage, but they screamed for one more song as if they were 200:) So we got "Spiralling Into Depression" as well:) After the gig we sat with some friends for a while and in the middle of the night we drove back to Regina. And I had learned that Toontown apparently has a small metalscene, but certainly one that is loud! \m/
