   JON OLIVA'S PAIN

After all the years with Savatage, in the band or behind the scenes, and other projects like Doctor Butcher with Chris Caffery or the popular Trans-Siberian Orchestra, mastermind Jon Oliva came up with a solo CD under the name of Jon Oliva's Pain. And it's great to hear the unique and unsurpassed voice of Jon again!

It was only Jon Oliva's band playing that night in Weert and we expected to hear most of the songs from his solo CD "'Tage Mahal", complemented with some Savatage stuff, but it was the other way around! Not that he has a reason to be ashamed for the new songs (on the contrary!), but he turned this gig into a Savatage fest! The venue wasn't full, but the crowd's response wasn't any less for it. Who would've thought we'd ever hear songs like "City Beneath The Surface" or "The Dungeons Are Calling" again live? People sang along like crazy and Jon as well as the rest of the band clearly had fun, Jon Oliva's Pain © Nico Wobben Jon also liked seeing a lot of Savatage shirts in the audience. The setlist pretty much speaks for itself, 5 songs from "'Tage Mahal" and the rest all old Sava classics! "Father, Son, Holy Ghost" was written for and dedicated to friends he lost in the 9/11 desaster. But the most special moment was when he dedicated "Ghost In The Ruins" to his good friend Anke Wallrabenstein (online known as SavaHexe) who passed away last November, esp. appropriate because it's a song Jon's brother Criss (who died in a car-accident 11½ years ago) wrote the music to. We knew and miss Anke too - this one's for you girl!!! Matt LaPorte and Jerry Outlaw were duelling on guitar and put all of their hearts and soul into it, it was incredible!!! Actually the whole gig was, the musicians were all truly great and Jon was of course amazing, both as a person as well as vocally!

Let's raise the fist of the metal child... and our glasses (read: beers) to Anke! \m/
