NO MERCY FESTIVAL 2006
|
013 - Tilburg (NL)
April 17th 2006
Well I woke up on this day with only one thing one my mind, No Mercy festival. I was later informed that it was Easter?!?
After I prepared my stuff I took a train to Tilburg and met up with some friends there. There was a little confusion as to where the press line was but that problem was easily resolved. When I finally got in I had to look for the tour manger of Cannibal Corpse, because I had to do an interview with them. I spend most of time waiting and chasing after their tour manager so I missed the first bands.
After I decided to drop the interview I went to check out one of my favourite bands on the bill namely PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT. This is the first time I was seeing them live so I was stoked and let me tell you these guys didn't
disappoint me. They sounded great and brutal as always, the crowd was also really into them. There was also a pit which made a lot people very happy. I think it's a shame they didn't get to play longer.
The next band I checked out was SINISTER, I have seen a part of the new line-up live already and they were good. Sinister played most of the tracks from the new CD "Afterburner", they did play "Sadistic Intent" which was really cool. For some reason the crowd wasn't really getting into them, I could see some guys going crazy, but the majority of the crowd was just standing there. Well I think Sinister sounded great and I enjoyed their performance.
When Sinister finished their set, the guys from LEGION OF THE DAMNED were the next ones up. This was also the first time I was seeing these guys live. I'm not their biggest fan, but I did enjoy their music very much. They even managed to wake up the crowd and get them moving. The only tracks I know they played for sure were: "Werewolf Corpse", "Malevolent Rapture" and "Legion of the Damned". These guys managed to put on a good show and the sound was also very good.
PRO-PAIN is no stranger to the No Mercy Festival, I saw them a couple of years ago on this same festival. I will admit that it's a bit strange seeing a hardcore band playing among death & black metal bands, but Pro-Pain always manages to pull it off. This year was no exception, the whole crowd was into their music and they formed a pit for some of the songs. Their performance was energetic and I didn't hear any complaints about them. Pro-Pain played the following songs: "State of Mind", "Make War Not Love" and they closed their set with "Fistful of Hate".
I was excited to see MAYHEM perform, because this was going to be the first time I'll be seeing them perform with Atilla. As soon as they started playing I realised that the sound was very bad, I didn't even realise they opened with "Funeral Fog" because of it. It's a shame because that's a song I always wanted to see Atilla sing live, but hey I'll survive. In the end the sound did improve a little. I did recognise certain songs like "My Death" and "Death Crush", but the others were a little hard to figure out. This wasn't the best Mayhem performance I experienced and that was due to the sound.
Another band who's no stranger in the
death metal community and No Mercy is KATAKLYSM. As soon as these guys stepped on stage, the crowd went crazy and they stayed that way till Kataklysm finished their set. Their sound was great, the crowd was moving and a lot people were headbanging and singing along. Kataklysm also shot some live footage for an upcoming video clip. The best songs of the night were "Illuminati" and "Ambassador Of Pain"
Finally, the night was coming to an end and there were two more bands left on the bill. My decision was made before I even stepped inside the venue, CANNIBAL CORPSE!!! As soon as Cannibal Corpse started playing all hell broke loose, hair was flying everywhere and the pit grew bigger. This was the first time I got to see Cannibal Corpse live with Rob Barret on guitars, it was awesome. Their set list was pretty varied, they played songs from their earlier albums and also some songs from "Gore Obsessed", "The Wretched Spawn" and "Kill" of course. They opened with the song "The Time To Kill Is Now" and they finished their set with "Stripped, Raped And
Strangled". Cannibal Corpse also played my all time favourite song: "Hammer Smashed Face", I jumped in the pit and headbanged my ass off!
At the end of "Stripped Raped And Strangled" the guys from Grimfist, Legion Of The Damned and Kataklysm also came on stage and showered the crowd with beer.
As usual when everyone else went back stage, Alex Webster (bass) came down and talked to fans, shook their hands and took some pictures. He's a really cool guy, I couldn't think of a better way to end the night. All in all this years No Mercy Festival was killer!
