   ROCK INC FESTIVAL
Perzonal War © Nico Wobben De Bosuil - Weert (NL)
March 21st 2004

Mennen's new studioalbum was a good reason for Theo Samson and Joss Mennen of distribution and promotion office Rock Inc to organize its first festival. The Bosuil is a good venue to do so, and even though it wasn't very full, the atmosphere was great. The bill was very diverse, from straight forward rock to modern sounds to metal.

Pé Lemme © Nico Wobben Opener was PÉ LEMME who we remembered as former frontman of One Stroke. These days it's straight forward rock 'n roll with Dutch lyrics - sometimes party stuff, sometimes bluesy or funky (like the 2nd single "Mooie Meiden"). Very entertaining and good festival material. One of the last songs ("Doe Wat Je Graag Wilt") was their motto as well. Doe wat je graag wilt, en doe het dan goed (do what you really want, and do it well).

A band I really wanted to see again was PERZONAL WAR. These Germans are always good for some kickass metal, so it was headbanging time. Even though I like all members, I was esp. impressed by the rhythm section. New bassplayer Sven is the bold-with-goatee-but-nevertheless-fiercely-headbanging-type and drum-animal Martin was working his toms (and his tongue hehe) like crazy and was very much in the foreground, literally on stage as well as musically! The new songs sounded great, like the fast "Devil In My Neck" and the new single (and video) "My Secret", announced by singer Metti as a girlie song ;) It was catchy but with a faster climax, very cool. Perzonal War © Nico Wobben Time was running out so we got only one encore: "Born". Look out for their upcoming CD in May: "Faces".

Manigance © Nico Wobben Time for more bombastic progmetal with MANIGANCE - all the way from the south of France for one short festival gig, wow! The symphathetic guys put up a great show. Not totally my thing, way too much emphasis on the keyboards for me (including solos), but nevertheless strong melodic metal (with French lyrics) and an incredible singer! I'm not familiar with their titles, but they also included a cover of the French legends Sortilège in their set: "Messenger".

Superfly 69 © Nico Wobben SUPERFLY 69 managed to get quite some people dancing and jumping around with their catchy modern rock, but I couldn't do anything with it. I have to admit though, that it was a high-adrenaline show. They realized they stood out on the bill and said Holland was very open-minded, so they asked for us to give them a chance and just have fun together. Not a problem for most of the visitors! That was the announcement of the song "Superfly", I also remember "Mine All Mine" and in the end the Eurythmics cover "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)".

Mennen © Nico Wobben The Dutch guys of MENNEN (around ex-Zinatra singer Joss Mennen) are at an important point in their musical lives. The amazing new CD "Freakazoid" should be able to get the band to places they haven't been to before and I truly hope that's gonna happen! The band seems to be re-born and that energy radiated from the stage of the Bosuil!
As if we weren't anticipating enough, they started with a long intro: The Zinatra song "Somewhere" followed by the (I assume) tune of the Freakazoid cartoon where they got the CD title from. Then the band came on stage, pyros went off and Joss started with "BOB" (Band Of Brothers), singing the verses through a megaphone. This gig being the CD presentation, most of the songs were from that new CD. And wow, did they impress even more live! Whether it was sensitive like "Secrets And Lies" and the first encore, the Thin Lizzy style "Believe", or rocking heavily like "Wicked White" - it was all good! In between we heard some Zinatra-oldies like "Two Sides Of Love" and the hitsong "Love Or Loneliness", some Mennen-oldies like "Time" with Eric on acoustic guitar (no "Killerdog" despite several loud chants!), and some great coversongs, like Supertramp's "School" and Lucifer/Margriet Eshuijs' "House For Sale". These covers esp. showed in what great shape Joss' voice was. He jokingly added some lines of "Take Me Home" ("from the time before John Denver started to fly"- errrmmmm...) and "Shout" - the latter during the magnificent "House For Sale" where Joss stepped off the stage and let people in the audience sing along to it's chorus :) After the set we got to listen to the beautiful, acoustic "Life" from "Age Of Fools" as an outro. Steaming show like I haven't seen from them before (and I've seen quite a few)!
