SAXON

Antagon-Halle - Frankfurt (D)
October 8th 2005

WOW!!! What a gig!! Well, sorry, let me start from the beginning. Actually, the concert should have taken place earlier this year in Münster-Breitefeld in the Live Arena. But shortly before that gig, the house of singer Biff Byford went down in flames and the whole tour had to be cancelled. Unfortunately, since the Live Arena is not a metal location anymore, the concert had to be moved to Frankfurt. The doors should have been opened at 7 pm, but it was only at 8 pm the doors did finally open and we could get in. And it was easy to see that the sold out gig would really be hot that night. We were quite fast and got a good place in front of the mixing desk, good for my freshly tattooed back! When the lights went out at 9.30 pm, we couldn't move anymore, but why should we? We had a good place, good sound and a good sight. One other thing before I continue: the band announced to play only songs from the first five records, so no "Crusader" this time?!? Or maybe...
Saxon started with "Motorcycle Man", and they really were in a good shape and they all had fun to rock the house that night! After a few minutes, the sweat was dripping off the ceiling, and some visitors, who had actually bought a ticket could not get in because there was no room...so they followed the concert from the window outside. But I must say, the doors should have been opened at 7pm, and if you are not there at 9.30 pm when the gig starts..sorry, it's their own fault! To go on with Saxon now, the band played almost all the hits from their first records, although some fans might have hoped for "Backs To The Wall", "20.000. Ft." or "And The Bands Played On", but well, you can't have everything. Also less famous songs were played, not many people knew "Play It Loud", "Stallions Of The Highway", "To Hell And Back Again", "Redline" and "Suzie Hold On", and I didn't either. A moment to remember was when Biff took the western guitar and started "Frozen Rainbow". After "Never Surrender", Biff asked the crowd what they wanted to hear. No doubt, "Crusader" was the most frequently asked song, and Biff was booed when he said that they actually only wanted to play songs from the first records. Finally, no surprise, Paul Quinn started playing "Crusader" and they crowd went totally crazy! That cult-song was followed by "Dallas 1 pm" and "The Eagle Has Landed", and the next evergreen the English guys played was "Denim & Leather" as well as "Wheels Of Steel" with a nice singalong-part fort the fans. The first encores were "747 (Strangers In The Night)" and "Princess Of The Night", the very final song (2nd encore) was "Heavy Metal Thunder", a perfectly fitting song for that wild hot night. A worthy final!!
By the way, there will be another Saxon gig in December this year in Aschaffenburg, in the Colos-Saal. For all those who missed this gig, go and see the old rockers, they are (still) worth it !!!
