   SONATA ARCTICA - TRIO NISKALAUKUS
Batschkapp - Frankfurt (D)
October 14th 2004

After having played nothing but support shows outside of Finland, the melodic power metal band Sonata Arctica is doing some small headliner gigs on their day-offs on their tour with Nightwish. And they brought some friends, the TRIO NISKALAUKAUS. They are also Finnish but they did sing in German. Well, most of the audience didn't really understand but nevermind. The alternative-metallic sounds were mainly liked by the crowd, and if the soundengineer hadn't made some mistakes which had been bad for everyone's ears, the show could have been almost perfect. Well, it wasn't too bad!

At about 9 pm, SONATA ARCTICA entered the stage, starting off with the fast "Misplaced", the opener of the new album "Reckoning Night", and they controlled the audience from the first minute on. The next song was a slower one, "Blinded No More", also from that record, which was published only three days before the gig. "Kingdom For A Heart" was next, a faster song from "Ecliptica", followed by the "underwear-song" "Victoria's Secret" and the very well-cheered-for mid-tempo song "Broken", both from last year's record "Winterheart's Guild". The crazy song "Wildfire" and the ballad "Last Drop Falls", last one from the 2nd album "Silence" were played. Instead of the most wanted ballad "Letter To Dana" from the debut, the young men performed the other ballad from that record, "Replica". "My Land" and "Black Sheep" were next (played as one, just like on the live CD "Songs Of Silence", and then the band left the stage for the first time. The instrumental song "Reckoning Day, Reckoning Night" announced the first single CD from the current record: "Don't Say A Word", and the crowd went crazy!! Actually, the band didn't plan to return after "Full Moon" and the very fast "The Cage" but the audience wanted another last song so bad, that the band returned and played "Abandoned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited" to finish the about 90-minutes-lasting show.
I have seen the band for the 5th time now, and this gig was definetely the best!! The main reason was singer and main songwriter Tony Kakko, who had an excellent voice that night, he hit every tune perfectly!! But also the joy of playing by guitar-player Jani Liimatainen and keyboarder Henrik Klingenberg, who both did great background vocals, were hardly to surpass! Completed by the rhythm section Marko Passikoski (bass) and Tommy Portimo (drums), Sonata Arctica did a great job, a superb live-performance! I am looking very forward to the next live activities of the melodic-power-quintet!!!
