   TESTAMENT
Steve Smyth © Nico Wobben Biebob - Vosselaar (B)
July 27th 2003

Only a few days ago we heard TESTAMENT was going to play in Vosselaar, but Cora, Nico and myself didn't think twice and made arrangements to attend the show (thanks Laurie!). Even though it's a small venue and way too hot when it's packed, there's always a good atmosphere. The lights are usually pretty shitty there, so Nico decided to just go and enjoy the show instead of struggling through the masses with his photogear. Well he did make a few snapshots with our digital camera;) After the show we grabbed my buddy Steve Smyth for a fun interview which you'll find in the interview section soon.

During the gig we were in the front and even though the sound wasn't so great anywhere, it was a total blur where we were. I was in front of Eric Peterson, so his guitars were basically the only thing I could hear well. Sometimes it was hard to make out the songs even (those I don't know so well), but it didn't keep us from having a blast anyway. The stage is small, I had Chuck and Eric standing on my hair and almost on my hands several times, had to duck a few times to avoid Chuck's mike-standard as well as the crowdsurfers/stagedivers. Still I came out with a couple of neat bruises in my face, but that was because I was so smart to keep smashing into the monitor before me while headbanging hahaha! Oh well, that's metal, right?! \m/

Steve DiGiorgio and Eric Peterson © Nico Wobben So I can't really say much about the sound, but the energy level in the venue was certainly high. Testament is a band that give all, no matter what. Every member (except for the drummer of course) was running around as much as possible and interacting with the crowd a lot. Chuck was in great shape as we've already seen at the No Mercy fests, those growls just fill up the whole venue (ok, the delay on them also helps;)). Steve and Eric alternate the soloing and to hear and see DiGiorgio work his bass just makes my jaw drop. Jon Allen is still on his break due to a family matter (hang in there buddy!) and Johnny Tempesta (a.o. Rob Zombie) was filling in on drums.

The setlist contained mainly old stuff: "Eerie Inhabitants", "Practice What You Preach", "Burnt Offerings", "Alone In The Dark", "Into The Pit", "Over Chuck Billy © Nico Wobben The Wall" and "Disciples Of The Watch". Furthermore I recognized "Low" and from "The Gathering" I only remember the great "True Believer". The Biebob was packed and the audience sang along and chanted the whole time. Chuck had us front-rowers sing along as well *ducking again*;) There was a moshpit and a lot of crowdsurfing and stagediving going on, though during "Over The Wall", where Chuck, as usual, urged the people to come upon the stage, there was no crazy invasion as we've seen at No Mercy.

All in all hard to describe how good the show actually was musically, but hey, how often do we still get to see a great band like Testament in such a small venue with the musicians literally in your face:) Definitely a fun night to remember!!
