   THE GATHERING - PAATOS
Paatos © Patrick Wicke Batschkapp - Frankfurt (D)

PAATOS, a Swedish band, opened for The Gathering on that tour. Having a woman on the microphone as well, the band is playing progressive rock, sometimes it is not even rock, but only progressive, some dreamy pop-passages were played. The penetrating voice of the vocalist Petronella Nettermalm always stood in the foreground, reminding me of Björk sometimes, also as the instrumental fraction played dodgy structures. In the end, Paatos were about 45 minutes on stage, they played nine songs (one in Swedish, dedicated to Petronella's son).

the Gathering © Patrick Wicke After a break for re-designing the stage, THE GATHERING entered the stage of the meanwhile well attended Batschkapp. Special applause was reserved for pregnant Anneke van Giersbergen, the charismatic singer of the Dutch band. They played very tightly together (as usual), presenting a diverse setlist that changed the moods every once in a while. It was containing rather newer material though. From my favourite album "Nighttime Birds", they only played the titletrack (which was cheered for a lot) and the opener "On Most Surfaces", and they performed only one song from "Mandylion": not the hit single "Strange Machines" but "Eléanor".
In the end, the Dutch quintett was unpredictable as always, sometimes quiet and calm, sometimes dreamy, sometimes even heavy, all in all very diverse. Anneke was in despite of her pregnancy in a very good condition vocally and in a very good mood generally, on some songs she even played the rhythm guitar.
A nice, quite calm evening, The Gathering were almost 90 minutes on stage. But I would have been happier if they had played more songs from the records that I have mentioned.
