ASSAILANT STUDIO REPORT
|
We're very happy to announce that from now on you can also read here what the guys in ASSAILANT are up to during the recording of their debut album.
The band from Umeå/Sweden recently signed a deal with German label Dockyard 1 and they'll keep us posted about all the latest happenings around the creation of their first album.
(crossposted at http://www.assailant.se)
To start things off, drummer Patrik is giving an overview on what there is to come:
At this moment the plan is to first record the guitars in our own studio. When the guitars are finished and we are satisfied we'll record the bass and after that the synth. This will all be done by October 31st when the recording of the drums will begin which by the way will take aproximately 10 days and will be done in "Musikantens" Studio in Umeå.
Three weeks from christmas Mr Sundqvist will fly down to Hamburg to record the vocals, one week from christmas Oskar and I will join Peder in Hamburg for the mixing process.
The record will then be mastered and hopefully - if everything goes as planned the album - the debut album of Assailant, will be released on 27th of March.

And so here Jocke (b) sums up the first week:
(posted Sept 4th 2005)
Well, recordings of the album begun this week. We started out by trying to get a good rhythm guitar sound, a task that turned out to be easier said than done. Me and Oskar spent about four nights trying different guitars, amps and mics that we were able to borrow from family and friends, before we finally found something acceptable. The rest of the week was spent laying down the rhythm guitars. So far we've managed to finish the rhythm guitars on five tracks, and at this rate it will probably take us about three more weeks to finish the guitars, including all the melodies, harmonies and solos. After that, we'll start recording the bass.

According to Patrik the second week has been like this:
(posted Sept 11th 2005)
This week has pretty much been the same as last, not much to add really. The rhythm guitars are almost finished which is a relief but there is still a lot left to do. I believe Oskar and Jocke are beginning to feel quite fed up wih our studio now after two weeks but of course they can manage, they have to. Me, myself and my drums are practising our songs as always...
Yesterday (saturday) we had a come-together (Oskar, Jocke and me + my girlfriend) playing some cards, shitchatting about the recording progress and drinking coffee. The word bajs (poop) unfortunally wasn't used as much as I'd hoped. BUT we took a nasty close-up of Jocke's acoustic guitar! ;)

Another week has passed and so it's time for an update, this time coming from Jocke again:
(posted Sept 19th 2005)
Ok, time for the third status report on the recording. During this week, we've been recording the guitar melodies. Me and Oskar are starting to get quite fed up with the studio, so the weakly visit by Patrik and Helena (Patrik's girlfriend) to take pictures for the studio report are extremely welcome.

The recordings are running smoothly, except for some problems we had with tuning the guitars. You can see the guitars on one of the pictures (the saw represents our wish to break all of them, due to the above mentioned tuning problems). Also, I've changed the strings and cleaned my acoustic guitar. I was afraid to touch it after the nasty close-up we took last week! Cheers!

Another update: finally Oskar made it happen! ;)
(posted Sept 25th 2005)
The fourth week of the recording of our debut album has just passed. We have finished up the last of the guitar harmonies and we've just started working on the guitar solos. On that note, I like to say that we have had two special guests, two of my brothers to be more exact, Mr. Nils Norberg (Nocturnal Rites) and Mr. Emil Norberg (Persuader/Savage Circus). We have all done one solo each on the song entitled "Ship of Fools", so expect nothing less than a 3 piece, totally mad, totally furious guitar duell from the Norberg clan.

Me and Jocke reckon that ALL the guitars will be finished in a couple of days and after that we can begin to work on the bass sound and we will, hopefully, find the most powerfull and evil bass sound ever heard.
I’m a wee bit fed up with this writing crap now, so I guess this will be all for now.
All the best... ya di ya da...

Here's Jocke with a delayed update:
(posted Oct 9th 2005)
Sorry about the late update, but we've all been busy.
Last week we started out with trying to get a good bass sound.
I was able to borrow a bass head from Fredrik, the bass player of Persuader, since mine is broken, and Emil
came to the studio to help out with the sound. Oskar was busy during the week at school. On friday we started recording the bass and by late sunday night we were finished.

This week we won't do anything in the studio because me and Oskar are busy with school and Peder is working in Sundsvall I think, but next week we'll start recording the keyboards.

So yeah, keys:
(posted Oct 29th 2005)
This week the keyboards were recorded and as far as I know everything went fine and quite painless.
At friday the whole band gathered at Helena's place as she was having a birthday party, and I believe almost everyone had a great time.. but I don't know how many remember something from that night.
Nasty close-ups a re coming in the future.

With some delay, Patrik is reporting the following about the past weeks (week 7-9 of the recordings):
(posted Dec 9th 2005)
29/10:
This week the recording of the drums began.
Some days earlier I moved the drums to the studio and saturday the 29th October I changed all heads on the drums with help from Oskar and Jocke. Owe Lingwall (Nocturnal Rites) helped a lot with the tuning so the drums sounded really kick ass, thanks!
Further on Ronnie, the soundtech, placed all the microphones and stuff.

31/10:
The 31st we were supposed to begin the recording but we experienced a lot of technical problems so we only managed to set up the sound and make a short try at "Eternal". Lousy day.

Friday the 4th was a varied day.
Mr Sundqvist was kind enough to offer two different cakes because it was his birthday, so I began the day with a piece of cake. Nice.
Then, when I arrived at the studio we became aware of another problem... we had run out of space, overfull harddrive. We took the evening and weekend off.

week 8
The second drum-week.
We only had three songs left when this week began.. but they were tricky and I was really out of shape. Anyhow we finished on tuesday and on wednesday I collected my drums and drove them back to their home.
The only thing I could think about at that particular time was potato chips, tv and general chilling... god damnit I was tired... still the time in the studio sure was a lot of fun.

week 9
This week we had a little cosy come-together at Jocke, everyone but Mack who unfortunaly wasn't there. We at some ginger-cookies and sipped some Glögg.
