Home Improvement—in the Sense of Better Living Conditions—with Better Furniture

Considering overall quality of life-and not purely investment or resale value for our homes-then home improvement can also be greatly aided by simply getting better furniture. It's amazing, sometimes, the furniture that people live with, almost as if they've forgotten about it, or forgotten that it is possible to replace it! Hearing someone in a store talk about furniture from Fashion for Home the other day inspired me to have a look around for a few new pieces of furniture, like these 2 seater sofas, for example. My husband's having a hard time getting his head around it, but what I found was important was for him to actually envision the pieces in the spaces in our home. I moved some of our existing furniture out of the way, and showed him a few pictures of possible furnishings and printed out the pictures. Granted, they were small, but as he held them in different spaces, he was able to get a better grasp of the possibilities and saw the definite improvement that could come of replacing some of our furniture. Now he's more engaged in the selection process and is looking forward to it about as much as I am. To me, that's overall a big improvement! So it can be important to broaden our sense of what home improvement is.

Industry experts predict that apart from warm woods and creative colors to memorable murals and tailored textures, 2012 will offer a multitude of options for those interested in giving their homes a fresh look. Many of these home décor trends are quite inexpensive and easy to incorporate as well. Elaborating on home décor trends, home design expert, author and TV/radio personality Christopher Lowell feels that upholstered furniture coverings are being driven more by texture and less by prints. Gone are the times of bulky, stationary pit sofa. These will now be replaced by lower backs and seats along with smaller "footprint" pieces clustered into conversation groups for more flexibility and ease of interaction. A good home décor trend for those that want to add personality and life to their bedroom, living room, family or office; a wall mural is a quick an inexpensive way to achieve that. The home décor trends in textures and fabrics for the next year will include iridescent metallic woven within fabric; strong patterns and bold prints; modern floral; tailored woven fabrics like tweed, herringbone, plaid and houndstooth; velvet/velour, sumptuous dupioni silk, and faux fur. Natural fibers such as bamboo, jute, eucalyptus, cotton, silk, wool and cork will remain popular in home décor. Experts also feel that home décor will become more affordable as an increasing number of people will opt for second hand yard sale items that are well made.
